Meet the newest medical device manufacturer: CVS

Jolly Sunshine Limited | Updated: Apr 08, 2018

Most of us know CVS as the local pharmacy where we fill our prescriptions (and maybe load up on some guilty pleasures while we're there), but CVS Health has much larger ambitions when it comes to the healthcare ecosystem. Late last year, it embarked on a $69 billion deal to buy health insurance company Aetna. Now, we learn that the company has developed a home dialysis device that it will put into clinical trials later this year. If all goes according to plan, CVS will secure FDA approval and have the medical device on the market by 2020.

In making the announcement, CVS Health said that it will be “approaching this new initiative in a staged approach with phases focused on early disease identification and patient education, followed by the development of a comprehensive home dialysis program, for both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The device has been designed with features intended to make home hemodialysis simple and safe for patients, in order to facilitate longer, more frequent treatments. In published clinical research, longer, more frequent hemodialysis treatments lead to better outcomes in appropriate patient populations.” Game supply and game card sleeve and trading card sleeve and soft card holder.

Treatment in dialysis clinics currently is the most common method for managing kidney disease. However, “published clinical research has shown improved cardiac health, metabolic control and survival for patients who are treated with longer, more frequent dialysis treatments. This treatment paradigm is best delivered in the convenience of a patient's home," said Bruce Culleton, MD, Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, CVS Specialty. Although home-care devices exist, they account for a tiny percentage of the market. CVS thinks it can change that dynamic. Game supply and game card sleeve and trading card sleeve and soft card holder.

“We’re not inventing a new way to do dialysis . . . we’re engineering an easier way to do dialysis in a setting that allows for more treatment,” Alan Lotvin, who is head of the specialty pharmacy business at CVS and leads the kidney initiative, told MarketWatch. “What we realized was we could bring this to market in a way that really meets the needs of patients and payers in a unique way, because we have the ability to look at this market with a fresh eye.” Game supply and game card sleeve and trading card sleeve and soft card holder.

CVS said that it will work with an undisclosed partner to manufacture the device but will retain exclusive rights.

This new initiative is a third piller in the vertical integration that CVS is engineering in the healthcare space. The aforementioned Aetna deal and CVS's merger with pharmacy benefit manager Caremark Rx are the other two. Game supply and game card sleeve and trading card sleeve and soft card holder.

The overarching goal is to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs. The development of an innovative homecare device for dialysis treatment feeds into that objective and, said CVS, could be a “positive disruptor, reshaping and redefining the kidney care space.” Game supply and game card sleeve and trading card sleeve and soft card holder.

When you consider these initiatives in the broader context of Walmart talking about acquiring health insurance company Humana and the Amazon-Berkshire Hathaway-JPMorgan Chase & Co. triad that targets the health insurance model, it does seem like the healthcare paradigm is shifting in some profound ways. Few would argue that it doesn't need to. Game supply and game card sleeve and trading card sleeve and soft card holder.
